Iwas Paputoxic: A Safe & Eco-Friendly New Year's Celebration (2026)

Every New Year's Eve, the air fills with the crackle of fireworks, but behind the dazzling displays lies a hidden danger. The EcoWaste Coalition is leading the charge with their "Iwas Paputoxic" campaign, aiming to protect communities from the hazards of traditional New Year's celebrations. This initiative, launched on December 15, 2025, in Quezon City, highlights the importance of safe and eco-friendly practices, especially for children. But here's where it gets controversial... is it possible to truly enjoy the festivities without the thrill of fireworks?

The campaign, held at Pinyahan Elementary School, brought together over 1,000 students and teachers, spearheaded by Principal Dr. Jocelyn Ladica. The core message? Firecrackers and fireworks cause injuries, fires, toxic emissions, and a mountain of hazardous waste. Instead, the campaign encourages children to embrace alternative noisemakers that are fun, safe, and kind to the environment.

Partner organizations joined the call for a "paputok-free" celebration. Dr. Percival Lao from the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health shed light on the risks. He explained that injuries are only the beginning. Firecracker smoke contains harmful chemicals that can trigger asthma and other respiratory issues. And this is the part most people miss... the impact extends beyond human health. Dr. Lao emphasized the interconnectedness of our world, pointing out the distress loud explosions cause to pets and wildlife, along with the contamination of our air, water, and soil.

Representatives from the Department of Health (DOH), Philippine National Police (PNP), and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) echoed these warnings, reminding everyone of the annual surge in firecracker-related incidents. EcoWaste Coalition National Coordinator Aileen Lucero encouraged the young participants to get creative, advocating for handmade noisemakers made from common household items.

Lucero's message was clear: "We want children to enjoy the holiday season without risking their health or safety." The event showcased various "alternatibong pampaingay" (alternative noisemakers), including shakers made from used boxes, coconut shells, piggy banks, and kitchen utensils. The program culminated in a lively demonstration, with each section enthusiastically playing their noisemakers and shouting slogans promoting safety.

Parent leader Juana Sanat and student leader Julian Dennise Cruzat reinforced the importance of community health, urging their peers to avoid firecrackers.

The "Iwas Paputoxic" campaign, a long-running initiative since 2006, supports the government's "Iwas Paputok" program. It's a call to action, promoting a safer and more sustainable New Year's Eve.

What do you think? Are you willing to trade the traditional fireworks for safer, eco-friendly alternatives? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Do you think the environmental concerns are worth the trade-off of the visual spectacle?
