The Iconic Rajinikanth: A Star's Unique Bengali Cameo
Rajinikanth, the legendary Tamil actor, has captivated audiences across multiple languages for over five decades. His 75th birthday celebration marked a milestone in his illustrious career, spanning Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam films. But did you know he ventured into Bengali cinema as well? In a rare instance of his work in a non-native language, Rajinikanth made a brief yet memorable appearance in the 1995 Bengali action drama, Bhagya Debata. This cameo remains his only foray into the Bengali film industry, adding a unique chapter to his extensive filmography.
The film, directed by choreographer Raghuram, featured Mithun Chakraborty as the lead actor, Jagadish Mondal, a hero fighting for the oppressed. Rajinikanth's role was that of a singer in the title track, a brief but impactful appearance. The story goes that Mithun Chakraborty personally requested Rajinikanth's involvement, honoring their friendship and the song became quite popular. The film also boasted a strong ensemble cast, including prominent Bengali actors such as Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Rituparna Sengupta.
This wasn't the first time Rajinikanth and Mithun Chakraborty collaborated. They had previously worked together in the 1989 Hindi film Bhrashtachar. Rajinikanth's versatility and popularity have led to numerous blockbusters in Tamil cinema, including Sivaji: The Boss, Enthiran (Robot), 2.0, Thalapathy, and Jailer. His recent film, Coolie (2025), directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, marks his 171st lead role, portraying him as a labour union leader fighting corruption. The film is set against the gritty backdrop of Visakhapatnam's docks and stars Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, and Shruti Haasan in key roles.
Despite his immense success in Tamil cinema, Rajinikanth's brief Bengali cameo in Bhagya Debata showcases his willingness to explore diverse languages and collaborations, adding a unique and intriguing dimension to his already impressive career.
